Daniel Goleman describes emotional intelligence as “the ability to identify, assess, and control one's own emotions, the emotion of others, and that of groups.”

Some key aspects of emotional intelligence include self awareness, self regulation, and empathy.

Self Awareness is recognizing your emotions and understanding the impact they have on yourself and others. When you’re able to identify your emotions, you start to recognize links between them and your actions. You also notice how your performance can be adversely impacted by these feelings.

Self Regulation is the ability to control your emotions. Controlling emotionally driven impulses allow you to better assess what you’re feeling in the moment and choose the best reaction. You’re able to tailor your communication and actions to a given situation when you’re not negatively impacted by emotional impulses.

Lastly, empathy helps you understand what is driving another person’s actions. You have a better understanding of their objectives and feelings when you look at situations from their perspective. Demonstrating empathy also builds trust and likability. Your counterpart notices your effort to better understand their perspective and then reciprocates.
